In face of the Global environmental challenges, more than ever before has consumerism become a moral issue. In the realm of furniture, environmentally conscious designers and consumers usually stress the materials with which the furniture is built and its sustainability (how long the piece will be in use). To be sure, these are important considerations, but another aspect that is as equally important is the sustainability of the design. There are some designers that have achieved timeless designs that transcend the cycles of fashion.  Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s …

WIS Design has created a very cute but sturdy looking series of little benches and stools or end tables that can be simply snapped together. They manage to convey a simple dignity rarely found in furniture designed for children.

In a straightforward celebration of joinery, the central clump of sticks is supported and held together by these darker green pieces looped over an empty space over what will form the last stick on the edge of the clump, which is also the top of the leg unit. Once the leg …

1. Wow! What an easy way to let kids get a lot of exercise in a very tiny space. Simply attach a slide to the side of the stairs!

2. A bed that can’t be outgrown: this former baby crib simply becomes a sofa-cum-lions-den as the baby outgrows it!

3. A chair designed by Architect Michelle Kauffman – designer of the gorgeous Glide House prefabs, with a twist. This chair is actually made entirely  of Kauffman-designed building blocks. Just the thing to bring out the creativity in your budding architect!
This is …

MyFab has an innovative idea that solves a real problem. One of the scariest things for anyone starting out in product design businesses is not knowing how many to make of any  new product design. It’s always a leap of faith that your brilliant idea will be appreciated and actually sell. Especially if you make very high-end designer furniture; each piece can be quite an investment in time and money.
A possible solution is in MyFab’s new site that is launching in California next month and will provide an online …

Recently graduated from Sweden’s Konstfack University, Japanese designer Sachiko Segawa presents her final degree project Take Kagu. Its name literally means “bamboo furniture” and is inspired by Segawa’s childhood memories of a bamboo forest and a new material – bamboo plywood. Using this new bamboo material, the designer created several pieces of furniture which in her words should “create a bamboo forest feeling “. Though there are several problems with bamboo forests, continues Segawa, bamboo is regarded as very ecological and sustainable material. We sincerely wish good luck to this …

Some of us have large and expansive separate dining rooms that are perfect for hosting holiday dinners and family feasts. But many of us — particularly those of us living in space-challenged apartments — only have tiny living rooms for everything we do. And in these cases, we must devise a seating area that can work for both lounging and dining.
So how do you handle this problem? Look for tables and chairs that can serve double-duty. You’ll probably want to avoid heavy overstuffed furniture and opt for lighter pieces that can be easily arranged. Fortunately, there …

Brand new from Italian manufacturer Fitting, here is the “Pyramid Book Case” - a modular shelving unit you can adjust according to your home space and storage needs. The system is made of aluminum-finished inclined boxes with transverse shelf for better arrangement of books, DVDs and other similar items. Depending on the wall dimensions you can choose how much of these boxes to arrange, hence the height of the “pyramid”. We look forward to see its debut at the Furniture Exhibition in Milan.

Though the beautiful RIN chair is the first collaboration between Fritz Hansen and Hiromichi Konno, the result is quite amazing, as we can see. The elegant and futuristic design of the chair may make it appear fragile, but it’s well supported by a 4-legged star-shaped aluminum base and polished steel pedestal. The seat shell, which comes in several colors, is made of black injection molded plastic (TPE) and seem to fit the body like a glove thanks to its ergonomic shape. Hiromichi Konno himself says about his chair: “I wanted …
